01 / The systemPlants make slow feedback impossible to ignore.

These experiments explored microgreens, herb growing, and propagation indoors. The materials were simple, but the system was not: light strength and distance, moisture, airflow, seed density, medium, and timing all influence the result.

Unlike software, the feedback loop cannot be rushed. That makes observation and documentation especially useful. A change today may only become clear after several days, and an apparently small difference can compound across the whole tray.

02 / ApproachKeep the trials small and visible.

The useful questions were practical: how densely should seeds be placed, when should the tray be uncovered, how does the light change the shape of new growth, and what happens when a cutting moves from water into a growing medium?

  • Change a bounded variable so the outcome remains interpretable.
  • Photograph the same stage; memory is a poor measurement tool.
  • Design around maintenance because the system must work every day, not once.

The medium changed, but the useful habits did not: isolate variables, make the state observable, work with real constraints, and improve the process as well as the output. Living systems simply add patience to the tool kit.
